7/28 - Santa Fe's Show Cancelled!
Sadly, due to a wicked bout of
something horrid (maybe Swine Flu, who knows!), William is regrettably forced to
cancel his Santa Fe show tonight. We take the cancellation of a show very
seriously and would do it only under extreme circumstances. We all wish William
a speedy recovery. Refunds will be issued at your point of purchase. If you’re
one of the folks who purchased tickets to the show send an email to wfmgmt@brickwallmgmt.com with
proof of purchase (online receipt, etc) and we’ll send you a small token by way
of apology. Again, terribly sorry.

New William Tour Blog!
First night of tour - Madison, WI. 7/8/09 - 9:30pm
My home is a van and I have become two Williams. One is a home cooker of pastas. The other a purveyor of convenient store racks. One sees a beautiful unchanging patch of yard from hour to hour and week to week. The other sees trees change at the speed of cruise control. I am traveled and humbled and often homesick and lost. But I am happy. Sometime confused. Usually lazy but hopeful for a spirit of inquisitiveness.
I find myself missing things a lot of the time. Most of the time it's family and friends. Or home. Or my God-daughter's smile after she has pooped her pants. Other times it's more vague, but no less salient. I itch but sometimes have nothing to scratch. A carrot which dangles though never caught.
I shall keep looking. That is all I can do, any of us for that matter.
DAY 3. Somewhere on Highway 35 South, on route to Nebraska - 10:20am
I'm taking a rare break from being behind the wheel. I used to disdain driving, now I'm restless being in a vehicle and not commanding it. But I'm thankful for the break. Sleep is already becoming a premium so it's best to grab it when we can.
I do enjoy traveling through the broader and open parts of the country. Even at home it gets far too easy to fall into distractions that don't permit valuable time to let the mind wander where it would rather like to go. Creativity is most effectively bred when it doesn't feel like it must be.
The shows have been wonderful so far. You treat me with a kindness I am humbled by and my gratitude for it is huge. I won't see home for a couple months, but getting to share music every night feels like family. More later. Coffee break beckons.
DAY 12: Interstate 5 South, Pacific North West, Heading to Portland, OR - 12:35pm
Writing from the van again, a clear, cool summer day on the road, en route to an in-store performance in Portland before tonight's show. It's been a busy tour so far but the shows have been going wonderfully, which always makes the dearth of sleep completely worth it. Time has begun to move along at a gradually quicker pace, which seems to always happen after about the first week of tour. Our train has turned into a well-oiled machine.
I had the great pleasure of recording a piece for NPR's "All Things Considered" a couple days ago, which was very meaningful to me as a big fan of the show. When the introduction began I had a surreal moment when I realized I was actually on the program instead of merely listening to it. The day I don't realize how extremely fortunate I am to be able to live out these amazing experiences is the day I no longer deserve to be in this position.
Driving this much, while certainly exhausting, is a wonderful chance to revisit albums which I might have forgotten for a time. I picked up the reissue of Sun Kil Moon's "Ghosts of the Great Highway," one of my favorite albums ever made and have been immersing myself in Kozelek's subtle brilliance. The funny thing about listening to songs you found at intensive times in your life is they act as a landmark of affectivity; reminding you where you were at first listen, and giving insight into where you are today. What you've gained, what you've lost, insights you would have preferred but which only come in their own time. Over the last several months I have noticed a real and salient sea change. It's a good thing. Would I trade the pain? Yes. Yes. Yes. But would I trade the invaluable wisdom such difficulties bring? No. Never. Knowledge only comes with a price, I suppose.
Touring makes me too esoteric.
Thanks for being the most appreciative, kind, and supportive group of people I've ever met. Cheers to you my friends, talk soon,
William
p.s. Current Road Reading: Just finished "Flatland" by Edwin Abbott, which I highly recommend. Started Doyle's "Hound of the Baskervilles.
